Heraeus Medevio expands in Costa Rica with the opening of its Phase III, creating 500 new job opportunities upon completion
• The company invested $35 million into the Phase III expansion at Heraeus Medevio’s Costa Rica site, located in La Lima Free Zone.
• Phase III will drive innovation for Heraeus Medevio customers in the design, development, and manufacturing of components, sub-assemblies, and finished devices. It is home to the company’s first electrophysiology assembly line and the Costa Rica site’s first research and development (R&D) laboratory.
Cartago, March 3, 2025 - Heraeus Medevio, a full-service contract design, development, and manufacturing partner to medical device original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) around the world; expands its operations in
Costa Rica with the opening of Phase III facilities, in
La Lima Free Zone, Cartago.
The site covers an area of 11,000 square meters and is projected to grow to 21,000 square meters when the expansion is finished. With an investment of $35 million dollars, the company expects to grow its current workforce by hiring 500 new employees upon completion, including specialized staff to lead its first (R&D) laboratory in Costa Rica.
Phase III’s manufacturing area enables expanded capabilities for Heraeus Medevio’s customers, with the addition of its first electrophysiology assembly line to produce sub-assemblies and finished devices: specialized and complex catheters with electronic features, which are aimed to improve the lives of patients with arrhythmia (a condition that causes irregular heartbeats) through a procedure called ablation.
Heiko Specht, President of Heraeus Medevio, sees the expansion as a critical step in supporting the growth of Heraeus Medevio’s customers. He stated, “We are committed to investing in the space and resources needed to meet our customers’ needs and grow our company by double digits annually. This expansion will help our current and future customers bring better medical devices to market faster and contribute to Heraeus Medevio’s vision of improving 100 million lives every year.”
Anna Jansen, VP of Operations and Site Leader, added that Costa Rican talent has been a key driver of the company’s local expansion. She said,
“Cartago’s exceptional talent pool and highly skilled labor force have enabled us to expand and explore new ways of supporting current and future partnerships. I’m excited to grow our team, now and into the future.” “Expanding the Costa Site has been a key pillar in Medevio’s global strategy,” added Markus Kriegl, Executive Vice President of Global Operations. “The distinctive level of talent, proximity to our customers, and vibrant ecosystem enable a simplified supply chain, efficient collaboration, and strategic manufacturing capacity for our valued customers.”
“Since its arrival in La Lima Free Zone, Heraeus has been a benchmark in the medical device industry and a strategic ally in the development of the park. Phase III reaffirms the commitment and confidence in Cartago as a hub of innovation and advanced manufacturing, characteristics that reflect the confidence of global companies in our value proposition and in Costa Rica as a strategic destination for the development of their operations. This reinvestment is a sign of the success they have achieved - in large part - thanks to the excellent and abundant workforce offered by the province, a key factor in the productive ecosystem of the region,” Fernando Carazo, General Manager at La Lima Free Zone detailed.
New job openings
As of January 2025, Heraeus Medevio Costa Rica has 650 employees, who occupy engineering, administrative, production, and technical roles.
With 500 new openings to be filled upon Phase III completion, there are a variety of new positions available within the R&D, engineering (electrophysiology), and production and manufacturing areas.
Top-tier facilities
Heraeus Medevio’s site in Costa Rica opened in June 2017 with additional expansions in mind. Phase II grand opening took place in May 2023.
Phase III consists of two clean rooms – ISO 7 on the lower level (1,600 square-meters) and ISO 8 on the upper floor (3,000 square-meters), with significant spaces for employees such as corporate offices, a cafeteria, and meeting rooms.
Heraeus Medevio’s global commitment is to achieve a 50% reduction of global operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and net zero by 2045. As part of the commitment, the Costa Rica site installed 1,309 solar panels in 2024, which will save 87 tons of carbon dioxide emissions in the first year alone.
The new building’s construction project has the Ecological Blue Flag. The site is ISO 13485 and ISO 50001 certified as well as FDA and MDSAP registered.
