AI in finance: an advantage in the race for new global functions

  1. Part of CINDE's Strategic Partners Insights Series

By Banco Promerica, Strategic Partner of CINDE. Artificial intelligence has already transformed areas such as marketing, sales, and engineering. However, the finance function remains among the last to adopt it, even as companies accelerate their investment. This still-silent gap is beginning to separate organizations that strengthen the efficiency and strategic value of their operations from those at risk of falling behind.

The paradox is striking. According to Crisil Coalition Greenwich’s 2025 corporate treasury study, fewer than 10% of treasury teams globally have embedded AI into core functions such as forecasting and fraud detection, while half have not yet started. Separately, an IDC study sponsored by Microsoft found that organizations leading in AI adoption achieve substantially higher returns than laggards. The difference goes beyond operational efficiency: it creates a competitive advantage for taking on more strategic processes and new global functions.

For Costa Rica —a hub for corporate service centers and regional financial operations— this is especially relevant. Many treasury, forecasting, and control decisions are executed locally. The responsible adoption of AI can help these operations demonstrate greater efficiency, sophistication, and readiness to assume higher-value responsibilities within their global organizations.

The critical nuance is that value does not come simply from adopting quickly, but from adopting with governance. The ability to audit, explain, and oversee AI-assisted decisions distinguishes organizations that successfully scale these tools from those that accumulate hidden risks.

The recommendation is to prioritize one high-friction use case, demand traceability from the start, and choose financial partners that combine technological capabilities with strong control discipline.
