Life Sciences Forum 2018: The Future is Already Here

San José, Costa Rica. October 16, 2018. In the United States, a patient in California is operated on by attending surgeons and another group of surgeons thousands of kilometers away. His blood pressure and vital data are sent to a mega-database that is cross-checked for recommending recovery treatments. This data is protected without risk of exposure to unauthorized persons. How is this possible? Thanks to technology.

This world of virtual reality, connectivity, blockchain, mega data and cybersecurity was discussed by ten international speakers with an audience of 700 people consisting of life science company managers, university staff, high-level private sector executives, public sector representatives, postgraduate students in life science-related fields, etc., during the fourth edition of the Life Sciences Forum 2018 in Costa Rica, a country that proposes to continue hosting the head offices of leading life science companies and new-age technology service providers.

Costa Rica has all the potential human capital and necessary conditions for getting the most out of the current technological convergence taking place in life sciences, generating major investment opportunities here.

This is the conclusion after two days of papers presented by international speakers in the framework of the Life Sciences Forum Costa Rica 2018. The activity brought together participants from fifteen countries the world over, such as the United States, Germany, Mexico, Holland, Estonia, Italy, India, Saudi Arabia, Guatemala, El Salvador and Colombia, among others.

Organized by CINDE, the Costa Rican agency for promoting and attracting foreign direct investment to Costa Rica, this is one of the most important specialized events in Latin America, positioning the country as the regional hub for analysis of the most innovative issues of the moment.

Life Sciences Forum 2018 was held for the first time in the Costa Rican Convention Center in San José, making it possible to accommodate a larger number of participating companies and visitors and expand the size of the event.

“The speakers have made it clear what the trends will be in the near future, and now it will depend on us to create the right conditions to take advantage of this. Costa Rica has to work on getting the most out of its technology and track record to continue being a key player and center of excellence for the industry, while also generating quality employment and opportunities for the entire country’s human talent,” remarked CINDE's Managing Director, Jorge Sequeira.

At the close of the day, participants took guided tours of some of the life sciences multinationals to see first-hand the success stories they have achieved in Costa Rica.
